Blue Card

In 2012 Germany transposed the highly qualified directive of the EU. As a result the EU Blue Card was introduced as a new residence title for highly qualified foreigners with the desire to work in Germany. The EU Blue card is issued for up to 4 years. If the working contract is limited to a period of less than four years, the EU blue card will be valid for the time of the working contract plus three months.

Foreigners can apply for the EU blue card if they have

  • a degree from a German or other recognized/comparable foreign university and
  • a minimum gross annual income of currently € 53,600 or € 41,808 in shortage professions (scientists, mathematics, engineers, doctors and IT-skilled workers)

Unless foreigners have a German university degree, consent of the Federal employment agency is generally required for issuing a EU Blue Card for a specific profession.
