Residence titles

The Residence Act provides for the following residence permits:

  • (temporary) residence permit
  • settlement permit (i.e. permanent residence permit)
  • the EU Blue Card in accordance with §19a of the Residence Act
  • ICT-Card/mobile ICT-Card
  • Visa
  • Residence card of a family member of a EU-citizen
  • EC long-term residence permit (entitles the holder to mobility within the European Union by granting a right to a limited residence title in other member states)

The above-mentioned certificates are granted by the local foreign nationals’ offices and they are issued as electronic residence titles (eAT). EATs are exclusively printed by the Federal Printing Office in Berlin and then sent to the responsible foreign nationals’ authority.

Important: Ideally, you should allow about 3 weeks from the time you submit your application to the time you receive your residence permit. You should therefore book an appointment about several months before your residence permit expires.

If you wish to apply for or extend a residence permit, please bring the following documents with you

  • passport
  • current biometric passport photo
  • completed application form
  • health insurance certificate
  • Employment contract/pension notification/SGB II notification
  • last three payslips
  • Rental agreement (proof of the current rental amount)
  • Overview of mandatory pension insurance contributions (for applications for a permanent residence permit)
  • Fee up to 147 Euro

Experience has shown that further documents are required. During your visit, we will clarify whether we still need documents from you.
