Since its opening in 1991 the Kunsthalle Münster, as a municipal institution, has presented national and international contemporary art. Without a permanent collection, the Kunsthalle Münster responds flexibly to current trends and socially relevant themes in alternating exhibitions. To this aim it develops innovative formats for displaying and communicating art on more than 1000 m² available project space. The Kunsthalle Münster is devoted to the presentation and discussion of the most recent tendencies in contemporary art. Solo and group exhibitions reflect a broad range of new developments in the world of art on the local, national and international level. The Kunsthalle Münster is a production centre and laboratory, where artists are able to work experimentally, with a sense of risk. In this sense, the Kunsthalle Münster also explicitly promotes new artistic production. This combination of production, presentation and communication is one of the institution’s distinctive features.
In addition to its exhibition activities, the Kunsthalle Münster understands itself as a platform for discussing socially relevant current issues and future developments. Its supporting programme of events it offers diverse ways of accessing what is on display, allows combining artistic practice and its theoretical considerations and promotes an intensive engagement with prevailing questions of everyday life. The involvement of artists and others engaged in various cultural fields fosters the interdisciplinary approach.
