Conference City Münster “Everybody wants to go to Münster” recently was the cover headline of a major German daily newspaper. That is a slight exaggeration. But it is a fact that Münster is among the major German cities for which the best prospects of growth con- tinue to be forecast. A young city of education and science, a prospering business location – with a rich history, lively culture, beautiful cityscape and lots of green: splendid con- ditions for your convention, your guests will feel completely contented. Actually, everything went excellently. 150 high-ranking delega- tions from all over Europe, hospitality in distinguished accom- modations, an expectant public – optimal conditions for pro- ductive negotiations. Only there was the rain. And the brown bread. Fabio Chigi had his problems with those. And the papal envoy complained about these at the Westphalian Peace Con- ference in his poems. Tempi passati All of that was in the period from 1644 to 1648. The Roman legate‘s two points of complaint can now be considered rec- tified. The amount of rain was due to the Little Ice Age – in Münster this is now substantially under the German average. And the brown bread – or Schwarzbrot – is no longer by any means the only signature feature of Münster‘s exquisite cuisine (although the traditional “Pumpernickel” has a firm fan base all over the world). What has remained Münster as a location with Europe-wide pull. One can still have successful meetings here, as in the past. And nowadays, even Italians spoilt by sun and saltimbocca can feel at home in Mün- ster. Successful together The short channels within the network allow fast access to information – and for you as guests, direct line to the right contact persons, arranged via the Conference Office. Our networks’ work is focused upon optimising services and opening up new markets. Particular attention is paid to the intensive cooperation with all nine colleges and universities in the city, the researchers and teaching staff of which are frequently among the initiators and organisers of conferences. Is it important to you that you organise your convention as sus- tainably as possible? Would you like to optimise your confer- ence processes as regards the aspects of e.g. climate protection or saving resources? The Conference Office will be happy to assist you in your planning with bundled know-how – in a very uncomplicated way. The Conference Office is committed in dif- ferent ways, in cooperation with the Office for Green Spaces and Environmental Protection. We keep ready a wide and var- ied range of suggestions as to how you can arrange your event to be climate-friendly – ranging from questions of mobility to resource consumption and green IT to projects of compensa- tory climate protection. Climate-friendly events One important key indicator is the CO2 emission of a conven- tion. A convention is climate-friendly if the calculated CO2 emis- sion is substantially reduced, e.g. by using the “Welcome! Ticket Münster” or the use of recycling paper with the “Blue Angel”. The journey to and from the location is also an important fac- tor of course. This is a matter of persuading your convention attendees to do without arriving and leaving by car or aero- plane (guests that arrive by aeroplane can compensate for the CO2 emission with most airlines). One of the convincing solu- tions for this is e.g. the event ticket of Deutsche Bahn. Events are also climate-neutral, or CO2-“neutral”, if the CO2emission is kept neutral and completely compensated for by a climate-protection project. The aim is to keep down the CO2 emissions caused by an event and thus cause as little envi- ronmental pollution as possible. 8 Conventions in Münster

However, it has also established itself internationally with now over 270 certified hotels in 15 countries. This title is awarded to municipalities that advocate fair trade in a special way. From FMO you can reach the city centre by bus or taxi in approx. 30 minutes. You can find flight times and other information at www.fmo.de Arriving by Car You can reach Münster directly via the motorways A 1 and A 43. In the core area of the “German Climate Protection Capital” an environmental zone has been set up. Arriving by Train Münster’s main train station is located in the heart of the city. Conference Venues A conference city like Münster obviously offers a multi- tude of different venues that specialise in the conveni- ent hosting of conventions and conferences. Especially for events from a certain scale, the various halls of the Messe und Congress Centrum Halle Münsterland (Halle Münsterland fair and convention centre) should be mentioned in this connection.
