12. Fürstbischof Christoph Bernhard von Galen: 1650 - 1678
Der 1650 zum Bischof von Münster gewählte Christoph Bernhard von Galen musste sich zunächst um die Durchsetzung seines absoluten Herrschaftsanspruchs bemühen: Zahlreiche Städte des Bistums waren noch von fremden Truppen besetzt, und Münster betrieb die Erhebung zur freien Reichsstadt, um sich den Ansprüchen des Fürstbischofs zu entziehen.
Nach mehreren Belagerungen gelang es ihm 1661, die Stadt Münster einzunehmen und ihr wichtige Selbstverwaltungsrechte zu entziehen. Im Westen der Stadt ließ er eine Zitadelle bauen, in der er bischöfliche Truppen zur Überwachung der Stadt stationierte. Die Kriege gegen die Niederlande und die Beteiligung münsterischer Truppen am Türkenkrieg 1664 brachten keine dauerhafte Erweiterung des Herrschaftsgebiets, sondern führten zur Verschuldung des Fürstbistums.
Als Bischof betrieb Christoph Bernhard von Galen eine religiöse Erneuerung und förderte die Volksfrömmigkeit durch neu eingeführte Wallfahrten.
