Self-employment
Secondary employment
It is also possible to pursue a self-employed activity in addition to another purpose of stay under certain conditions. In this context, particular consideration is given to whether the self-employed activity does not jeopardise your main purpose of stay (e.g. your studies).
Application
In order to be permitted to work as a self-employed person in addition to your main purpose of stay, you can submit an informal application to the foreign nationals office.
In the application, you should state your reasons for wishing to pursue your desired activity, and specify the time frame in which the activity is to be carried out.
If you wish to work as a freelancer, you should also submit details of potential commissions for consideration.
If you would like to start your own business, you should prepare and submit a business plan.
Students also need a written confirmation from the university that the pursuit of self-employment will not negatively affect the success of their studies.
In addition, further documents may be required in individual cases. If this applies to you, we will inform you accordingly after receiving your application.
Procedure
After you have applied for part-time self-employment, we will check whether the activity is permitted alongside your main purpose of stay.
If permission is granted, you will be informed of this in writing and may appear at the legal and foreign nationals office so that your supplementary sheet can be altered. Please bring your passport, your residence permit and your supplementary sheet to this appointment.
